വനിതാ വിഭാഗം ബാഡ്മിന്റണിൽ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വർണ പ്രതീക്ഷയായിരുന്ന പി വി സിന്ധു ഫൈനല്‍ കാണാതെ പുറത്തായി. സെമി ഫൈനലില്‍ ലോക ഒന്നാം നമ്പര്‍ താരം ചൈനീസ് തായ് പേയിയുടെ തായ് സു യിങ്ങി നോടാണ് സിന്ധു അടിയറവ് പറഞ്ഞത്. നേരിട്ടുള്ള ഗെയിമുകൾക്കാണ് തായ് സു യിങ്ങിന്റെ വിജയം. സ്‌കോര്‍: 21-18, 21-12. ഇതോടെ ഈ ഇനത്തില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ സ്വര്‍ണ മെഡല്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷ അവസാനിച്ചു. കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒളിമ്പിക്‌സില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി വെള്ളി മെഡല്‍ നേടിയ സിന്ധുവിന് ആ മികവ് ഇന്നത്തെ മത്സരത്തില്‍ പുറത്തെടുക്കാനായില്ല.
തോറ്റെങ്കിലും വെങ്കല മെഡലിനായുള്ള മത്സരത്തില്‍ സിന്ധു ചൈനയുടെ ഹി ബിങ് ജിയാവോയെ നേരിടും. ചൈനയുടെ ചെന്‍ യു ഫെയ് ആണ് തായ് സു യിങ്ങിൻ്റെ ഫൈനലിലെ എതിരാളി. മത്സരത്തിലുടനീളം തായ്‌പേയ് താരം ആധിപത്യം പുലര്‍ത്തി. ആദ്യ ഗെയിമിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തില്‍ സിന്ധു ലീഡെടുത്തെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് തിരിച്ചടിച്ച സു യിങ് സ്‌കോര്‍ 13-13 എന്ന നിലയില്‍ എത്തിച്ചു. പിന്നാലെ മികച്ച കളി പുറത്തെടുത്ത ലോക ഒന്നാം നമ്പര്‍ താരം സിന്ധുവിനെ വീഴ്ത്തി ആദ്യ ഗെയിം 21-18ന് സ്വന്തമാക്കി. രണ്ടാം ഗെയിമിൽ സിന്ധുവിന് പൊരുതാന്‍ പോലും സാധിച്ചില്ല. ഇന്ത്യന്‍ താരത്തിന്റെ ബലഹീനതകള്‍ കൃത്യമായി കണ്ടെത്തിയ സു യിങ് അനായാസം രണ്ടാം സെറ്റും സ്വന്തമാക്കി ഫൈനലിലേക്ക് മുന്നേറി.
സിന്ധുവിനെതിരേ മികച്ച റെക്കോഡുള്ള താരമാണ് തായ് സുയിങ്. അവസാനം ഏറ്റുമുട്ടിയ മൂന്നുതവണയും വിജയം തായ്‌പേയ് താരത്തിനൊപ്പമായിരുന്നു. അവസാനം ഇരുവരും ഏറ്റുമുട്ടിയത് കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷമാണ്. അന്ന് എച്ച് എസ് ബി സി ബി ഡബ്ല്യു എഫ് വേള്‍ഡ് ടൂറില്‍ നടന്ന മത്സരത്തില്‍ 21-16, 21-16 എന്ന സ്‌കോറിനാണ് സിന്ധു പരാജയപ്പെട്ടത്. അതേസമയം കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒളിമ്പിക്‌സില്‍ തായ് സു യിങ്ങിനെ പരാജയപ്പെടുത്താന്‍ സിന്ധുവിന് കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതല്‍ ആഴ്ച ലോക ഒന്നാം നമ്പര്‍ സ്ഥാനത്ത് നിന്ന വനിതാതാരം എന്ന റെക്കോഡ് തായ് സു യിങ്ങിനാണ്. എന്നിട്ടും താരത്തിനിതുവരെ ഒരു ഒളിമ്പിക് മെഡലോ ഒരു ലോക ചാമ്പ്യന്‍ഷിപ്പോ സ്വന്തമാക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. ഈ വിജയത്തോടെ സു യിങ് കരിയറിലെ ആദ്യ ഒളിമ്പിക് മെഡല്‍ ഉറപ്പിച്ചു.
