നിലയില്ലാ കയത്തില്‍നിന്ന് കഫേ കോഫിഡേയെ ഉയര്‍ത്തി മാളവിക

രാജ്യത്തെ ഞെട്ടിച്ചതായിരുന്നു ഇന്ത്യയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ കോഫി ഷോപ്പ് ശൃംഖലയായ കഫേ കോഫി ഡേയുടെ ഉടമ വി ജി സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ ആത്മഹത്യ. സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥ, 2019 ജൂലായില്‍ മംഗലാപുരത്തിനടുത്ത് വെച്ച് നേത്രാവതി പുഴക്ക് കുറുകെയുള്ള പാലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ചാടി ആത്മഹത്യ ചെയ്യുകയായിരുന്നു. 36 മണിക്കൂര്‍ നീണ്ട തിരച്ചിലിനൊടുവിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻ്റെ മൃതദേഹം കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. കഫേ കോഫി ഡേ 7000 കോടി രൂപയുടെ നഷ്ടത്തിലാണെന്നും കമ്പനിയുടെ സാമ്പത്തിക നഷ്ടങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് താന്‍ മാത്രമാണ്‌ ഉത്തരവാദിയെന്നും സൂചിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടായിരുന്നു സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ ആത്മഹത്യ.

ഒരു ലാഭകരമായ ബിസിനസ്സ് മോഡല്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നതില്‍ താന്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടുവെന്ന് സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ ആത്മഹത്യ കുറിപ്പിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. സ്വകാര്യ ഇക്വിറ്റി പങ്കാളികളില്‍ നിന്നും വായ്പകള്‍ നല്‍കിയ മറ്റുള്ളവരില്‍നിന്നുമുള്ള സമ്മര്‍ദ്ദവും ആദായ നികുതി വകുപ്പില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള പീഡനവും അസഹനീയമായതായും അദ്ദേഹം പറയുകയുണ്ടായി ഇവയും ആത്മഹത്യയ്ക്ക് കാരണമായതായി പറയുന്നു. 'ആരെയും വഞ്ചിക്കുകയോ തെറ്റിദ്ധരിപ്പിക്കുകയോ ചെയ്തില്ല, എന്നാൽ ഒരു സംരംഭകന്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ ഞാന്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടു' കുറിപ്പില്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

മാളവിക ഹെഗ്‌ഡെ

മാളവിക ഹെഗ്‌ഡെയുടെ പുതിയ കഥ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത് ഭര്‍ത്താവിൻ്റെ മരണത്തോടെയാണ്. ഭര്‍ത്താവിൻ്റെ മരണത്തിൻ്റെ ആഘാതവും മറ്റും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടുകളിലും പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലായ ഒരു സ്ത്രീക്ക് എങ്ങനെ നഷ്ടത്തിലായ കമ്പനിയെ ഉയര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പിക്കാനാകുമെന്ന് പലരും സംശയംപ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു. വന്‍ സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലായ കഫേ കോഫി ഡേ സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ മരണത്തോടുകൂടി വിസ്മൃതിയിലാണ്ട് പോകുമെന്ന്‌ ആളുകള്‍ ഉറച്ച് വിശ്വസിച്ചു.എന്നാല്‍ സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ ഭാര്യ മാളവിക ഹെഗ്‌ഡെ ഈ പ്രവചനങ്ങളെ എല്ലാം തള്ളി കഫെ കോഫി ഡേയെ പുതിയ ഉയരങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കൈ പിടിച്ച് മുന്നേറുകയാണ്. 2020 ഡിസംബറിലാണ് കഫേ കോഫി ഡേ എൻ്റർ പ്രൈസസ് ലിമിറ്റഡിൻ്റെ  സിഇഒ മാളവിക ഹെഗ്‌ഡെ സ്ഥാനം ഏറ്റെടുത്തത്.

അന്നുമുതല്‍ കമ്പനിയുടെ വളര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്കായി അവര്‍ അക്ഷീണം പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചുവരികയാണ്. 2019-ല്‍ കോഫി ഡേയ്ക്ക് 7,000 കോടി രൂപയിലധികം കടമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ഭാഗത്ത് ഭര്‍ത്താവിനെ നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ആഘാതവും മറുഭാഗത്ത് കമ്പനിയുടെ ഈ നഷ്ടവും മാളവികയുടെ മുന്നില്‍ വലിയൊരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവര്‍ തളര്‍ന്നില്ല. 2021 മാര്‍ച്ച് 31 ആയപ്പോള്‍ കമ്പനിയുടെ കടം വെറും 1731 കോടി രൂപയാണെന്നാണ് അതിന്റെ വാര്‍ഷിക റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടില്‍ പറയുന്നത്.

കര്‍ണാടക മുന്‍ മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി എസ്.എം.കൃഷ്ണയുടെ മകളാണ് മാളവിക ഹെഗ്‌ഡെ. 1969-ല്‍ ബെംഗളൂരുവിലായിരുന്നു ജനനം. ബെംഗളൂരു സര്‍വകലാശാലയില്‍ നിന്ന് എഞ്ചീനിയറിങ് പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കിയ മാളിവിക 1991-ലാണ് സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുമായി വിവാഹിതയാകുന്നത്. ഇഷാന്‍, അമര്‍ത്യ എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ടു മക്കളുണ്ട്. കര്‍ണാടക കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് അധ്യക്ഷന്‍ ഡി.കെ.ശിവകുമാറിൻ്റെ മകള്‍ ഐശ്വര്യയെയാണ് അമര്‍ത്യ വിവാഹം കഴിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. മാളവിക കഫേ കോഫിഡേയുടെ സിഇഒ ആകുന്നതിന് മുമ്പ് ഒമ്പത് വര്‍ഷത്തോളം കമ്പനിയുടെ നോണ്‍ ബോര്‍ഡ് അംഗമായി പ്രവര്‍ത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

മാളവിക നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ എത്തിയതിന് പിന്നാലെ ശക്തമായ മുന്നേറ്റമാണ് കഫേ കോഫി ഡേയ്ക്ക് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുള്ളത്. കോവിഡ് പ്രതിസന്ധികള്‍ക്കിടയിലും മാളവികയ്ക്ക്‌ കമ്പനിയുടെ ബാധ്യത കുറച്ചുകൊണ്ടുവരാന്‍ സാധിച്ചു. 'വെല്ലുവിളികള്‍ വര്‍ധിച്ചു, സിദ്ധാര്‍ത്ഥയുടെ അഭിമാനമായ പാരമ്പര്യം ഉയര്‍ത്തിപ്പിടിക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു എൻ്റെ ദൗത്യം. ബാധ്യതകളെല്ലാം പരമാവധി തീര്‍ക്കാനും ബിസിനസ്സ് വളര്‍ത്താനും ജീവനക്കാരെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാനും അദ്ദേഹം എനിക്ക് ഒരു ജോലി വിട്ടുതന്നുകൊണ്ടാണ് പോയത്'' മുമ്പ് നല്‍കിയ ഒരു അഭിമുഖത്തില്‍ മാളവിക പറയുകയുണ്ടായി.

2019 മാര്‍ച്ച് 31-ന് കഫേ കോഫിഡേയുടെ ബാധ്യത 7200 കോടി രൂപയായിരുന്നു. 2020-ല്‍ ഇത് 3100 കോടി രൂപയായി. 2021 മാര്‍ച്ച് 31 ആയപ്പോഴേക്കും ഈ ബാധ്യത 1731 കോടിയിലെത്തി. 'ഗണ്യമായ' കടം കുറച്ചതിന് ശേഷം സ്ഥാപനത്തെ ട്രാക്കിലേക്ക് തിരികെ കൊണ്ടുവരാന്‍ മാനേജ്‌മെന്റ് കഠിനമായി പരിശ്രമിക്കുകയാണെന്ന്' കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷം പുറത്തിറക്കിയ കമ്പനിയുടെ പ്രസ്താവനയില്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. തങ്ങളുടെ ഉത്പന്നങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് ഒരു രൂപ പോലും വര്‍ധിപ്പിക്കാതെയായിരുന്നു ഈ ഉയര്‍ത്തെഴുന്നേല്‍പ്പ്.

കോവിഡ് പ്രതിസന്ധികള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ പോലും പുതിയ  നിക്ഷേപകരെ കണ്ടെത്തി കമ്പനിയിലേക്ക് കൂടുതല്‍ മൂലധനം എത്തിക്കാന്‍ മാളവികയ്ക്കായി. നിലവില്‍ കഫേ കോഫിഡേയ്ക്ക് രാജ്യത്തുടനീളം 572 കഫേകള്‍ സ്വന്തമായുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ 333 കിയോസ്‌കുകളും പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുന്നു. 36,000 ത്തോളം കോഫി വെന്‍ഡിങ് മെഷീനുകളും ഇവര്‍ ഇതിനോടകം വിതരണം ചെയ്തിട്ടുണ്ട്.

VG Siddhartha, owner of Café Coffee Day, the largest coffee shop chain in India, has committed suicide. As on March 31, 2021, the company's annual debt stood at just Rs 1,731 crore.

Malavika Hegde is the daughter of former Karnataka Chief Minister SM Krishna. She was born in 1969 in Bangalore. Malivika, who completed her engineering degree from the University of Bengaluru, married Siddhartha in 1991. They have two children, Ishaan and Amartya. Amartya is married to Aishwarya, daughter of Karnataka Congress president DK Sivakumar. Prior to becoming CEO of Malavika Café Coffee day, he was a non - board member of the company for nine years.

Café Coffee Day has seen strong growth since Malavika took over the leadership. Despite the Covid crisis, Malavika was able to reduce the company's liability. 'The challenges increased and my mission was to uphold Siddhartha's proud heritage. He left me a job to fulfill all my responsibilities, grow my business and motivate my employees, ”Malavika said in an earlier interview.

As on March 31, 2019, Café Coffee day's liabilities were Rs 7,200 crore. By 2020, it will be `3100 crore. By March 31, 2021, this liability had reached Rs 1731 crore. "Management is working hard to get the company back on track after cutting 'significant' debt," the company said in a statement released last year. The uprising did not raise even a single rupee for their products.

Even in the midst of the Covid crisis, Malavika was able to find new investors and bring more capital to the company. Café Coffee day currently owns 572 cafes across the country. There are also 333 kiosks. They have already distributed over 36,000 coffee vending machines.
