മലയാളി ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്‍ എസ് സോമനാഥ് ഐ എസ് ആർ ഒയുടെ പുതിയ മേധാവി

മലയാളി ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും തിരുവനന്തപുരം വിക്രം സാരാഭായി സ്‌പേസ് സെൻ്ററിൻ്റെ ഡയറക്ടറുമായ എസ് സോമനാഥ് ഐ എസ് ആർ ഒയുടെ പുതിയ മേധാവി. ആലപ്പുഴ തുറവൂർ സ്വദേശിയായ സോമനാഥ് നേരത്തേ വലിയമല  ലിക്വിഡ് പ്രൊപ്പൽഷൻ സിസ്റ്റം സെന്റർ (എൽപിഎസ്‌സി) മേധാവിയായും പ്രവർത്തിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2018ലാണ് വിഎസ്‌എസ്‌സി ഡയറക്ടർ ആയി ചുമതലയേറ്റത്. ജിഎസ്എൽവി മാർക്ക് 3 ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള വിക്ഷേപണ വാഹനങ്ങൾക്കു രൂപം നൽകിയത് സോമനാഥിൻ്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലാണ്. 1985ലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം വിഎസ്എസ്‌സിയിൽ ചേർന്നത്. ജിഎസ്എൽവി മാർക് 3 പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഡപ്യൂട്ടി പ്രോജക്ട് ഡയറക്ടറായി 2003ലാണ് നിയമിതനായത്. 2010 മുതൽ 2014 വരെ ജിഎസ്എൽവി മാർക് 3 പ്രോജക്ട് ഡയറക്ടർ ആയിരുന്നു.

നിലവിലെ ഐ എസ് ആർ ഒ മേധാവി കെ ശിവൻ്റെ പിൻഗാമിയായി, പത്താമത് ചെയർമാനായാണ് സോമനാഥ് നിയമിതനായത്.  കൊല്ലം ടി കെ എം എൻജിനീയറിങ് കോളജിൽ നിന്ന് മെക്കാനിക്കൽ എൻജിനീയറിങ്ങിൽ  ബിടെക് ബിരുദം നേടി. എയ്റോസ്പേസ് എൻജിനീയറിങ്ങിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഇൻസ്റ്റിറ്റ്യൂട്ട് ഓഫ് സയൻസിൽനിന്ന് സ്വർണമെഡലോടെ എം ടെക്കും പാസായി.

S Somnath, a Malayalee scientist and director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center in Thiruvananthapuram, is the new head of ISRO. Somnath, a native of Thuravoor, Alappuzha, had earlier headed the Valiyamala Liquid Propulsion System Center (LPSC). In 2018, he took over as the Director of VSC. Launch vehicles, including the GSLV Mark 3, were designed by Somnath. He joined VSSC in 1985. In 2003, he was appointed Deputy Project Director for the GSLV Mark 3 project. From 2010 to 2014 he was the Project Director of GSLV Mark 3.

Somnath has been appointed as the 10th Chairman, succeeding the current ISRO chief K Sivan. He holds a B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. He also passed M.Tech with a gold medal from the Indian Institute of Science in Aerospace Engineering.
