ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിൽ കളഞ്ഞുപോയ ആണവ ഉപകരണം കണ്ടെത്തി

കളഞ്ഞുപോയ ഇരുമ്പ് അയിരിൽ ഇരുമ്പിന്റെ അളവ് കണ്ടെത്താൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ഗെയ്ജിൻ്റെ  ഭാഗമായ ആണവ വികിരണ ശേഷിയുള്ള ഉപകരണം കണ്ടെത്തി .ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിൽ ട്രക്കിൽ കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നതിനിടെ കളഞ്ഞുപോയ ആണവ വികിരണ ശേഷിയുള്ള ഉപകരണമാണ് വഴിയരുകിൽനിന്ന് കണ്ടെത്തിയത്. ഗുളിക വലുപ്പത്തിലുള്ള ഇത് യാത്രയ്ക്കിടയിലാണ് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടത്. ആണവ ഐസോടോപ്പായ സീഷ്യം 137 അടങ്ങിയ 8 മില്ലീമീറ്റർ മാത്രം നീളമുള്ള ഉപകരണം ന്യൂമാൻ എന്ന പ്രദേശത്തിനു തെക്കായി റോഡരികിൽ നിന്നാണ് കിട്ടിയത്. 6 ദിവസമായി തുടർന്ന തിരച്ചിലിനൊടുവിൽ പ്രത്യേക ഡിറ്റക്ടർ സംവിധാനവുമായി പോയ വാഹനമാണ് ഇതു കണ്ടെടുത്തത്. ഓസ്ട്രേലിയൻ സൈന്യം, ആണവ വകുപ്പ്, വിവിധ പൊലീസ് ഏജൻസികൾ തുടങ്ങിയവ തിരച്ചിലിൽ പങ്കെടുത്തിരുന്നു.

സുരക്ഷാ മാനദണ്ഡങ്ങൾ പാലിക്കാതെ, ഈ ഉപകരണവുമായി ദീർഘ കാലം  സമ്പർക്കത്തിൽ ഏർപ്പെടുന്നത് ക്യാൻസറിന് വരെ കാരണമായേക്കുമെന്ന് അധികൃതർ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നൽകിയിരുന്നു.

The 8mm-long device containing the nuclear isotope cesium-137 was recovered from a roadside south of Newman. After a 6-day search, this vehicle was found with a special detector system. The Australian Army, the Nuclear Department and various police agencies participated in the search.

Officials have warned that long-term contact with this device, without following safety standards, could even cause cancer.
