British star Emma Raducanu is the us open women's singles
champion. Emma's historic achievement came when the 19-year-old beat Canada’s Leyla
Fernandez (6–4, 6–3) in a teenage final that debuted after 22 years. Emma
entered the race as 150th in the world rankings. Le la was ranked 73rd, and Emma
reached the dream feat at the third championship point. Emma's coronation came
without a set to be surrendered in the tournament. Emma also holds the record
for the youngest player (18 years old) to win the grantslam title since Russia’s
Maria Sharapova. Sharapova was 17 when she won the Wimbledon women's singles
title in 2004. Emma will rise to 23rd position in the world rankings with a
title win. Lela is ranked 27th. This was the first grantslam final in which
unseeded stars met in the open era. Lela, who toppled 3 top 5 stars in the
world rankings, could not continue to excel in the final.
With the win, Emma also holds the record of being the first woman to win the grans lam title by playing qualifier in open year. It was after 44 years that a British star won the gran slam title in the women's singles. Virginia wade, who won the Wimbledon title in 1977, had previously lifted the grandslam title for Britain. British legends Virginia wade and Tim Henman were on hand to witness the historic final at the Arthur Ashe stadium. It was the first time since the 1999 us open final that 17-year-old Serena Williams and 18-year-old Martina Hingis had met in the grantslam singles final.
