The Queen reclaimed the royal and military status of Prince Andrew, the son of Queen Elizabeth and the brother of Prince Charles. The decision to cancel the awards was announced in a brief statement issued by Buckingham Palace. “With the Queen's approval and agreement, the Duke of York restored to the Queen the military ties and royal patronage. The Duke of York will continue to hold public office and be prosecuted as a private citizen, with Prince Andrew losing all privileges, including ‘His Royal Highness’. The Queen's reinstatement comes at the request of 150 veteran military officers in the wake of a U.S. sexual harassment case. Virginia Geoffrey has filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew in 2001, alleging he abused her when she was 17 years old.

Andrew is the third of four children of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Prince Andrew, who was part of the British Royal Navy for more than two decades, was a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War. He will lose at least a dozen titles when his military status expires.
