ശ്രീലങ്കയില്‍ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ വിരുദ്ധ പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തിനു നേരെ പോലീസ് വെടിവെപ്പിൽ ഒരു മരണം

ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ വിരുദ്ധ പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തിനു നേരെ പോലീസ് വെടിവെപ്പിൽ ഒരാള്‍ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടു. നിരവധിപ്പേര്‍ക്ക് പരിക്കേറ്റു. സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധിയിൽ വലയുന്ന ശ്രീ ലങ്കയിൽ ജനങ്ങള്‍ നടത്തുന്ന സര്‍ക്കാര്‍വിരുദ്ധ പ്രക്ഷോഭത്തിനു നേരെ ഇതാദ്യമായാണ് പോലീസ് വെടിവെക്കുന്നത്. ആള്‍ക്കൂട്ടം അക്രമാസക്തരാവുകയും പൊലീസിന് നേരെ കല്ലെറിയുകയും ചെയ്തതോടെ വെടിവെക്കാന്‍ നിര്‍ബന്ധിതരായെന്ന് ലങ്കന്‍ പോലീസ് വക്താവ് പറഞ്ഞു.

ശ്രീലങ്കൻ തലസ്ഥാനമായ കൊളംബോയില്‍നിന്ന് 95 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരെ റംബുക്കാനയിലാണ് പോലീസ് വെടിവെപ്പുനടന്നത്. രൂക്ഷമായ ഇന്ധനക്ഷാമവും അതിരൂക്ഷമായ വിലക്കയറ്റവുമാണ് പ്രതിഷേധവുമായി തെരുവിൽ ഇറങ്ങാൻ ജനങ്ങളെ നിര്ബന്ധിതരാക്കിയത്. രാജ്യത്തിൻ്റെ വിവിധഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ ഇന്ന് പ്രതിഷേധം പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് വാഹന ഉടമകളാണ് ടയറുകള്‍ കത്തിച്ചും കൊളംബോയിലേക്കുള്ള വഴി തടസ്സപ്പെടുത്തിയും പ്രതിഷേധിച്ചത്.

ശ്രീലങ്കയിലെ പ്രധാന പെട്രോള്‍ ചില്ലറ വിതരണകമ്പനി ഇന്ന് ഇന്ധന വില 65 ശതാമനത്തിലധികം വര്‍ധിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഇതിനു പിന്നാലെ രാജ്യത്തിൻ്റെ വിവിധഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ പ്രതിഷേധം പൊട്ടിപ്പുറപ്പെടുകയായിരുന്നു. ശ്രീ ലങ്കന്‍ സര്‍ക്കാരിൻ്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ള സിലോണ്‍ പെട്രോളിയം കോര്‍പറേഷന്‍ ഒരു ലിറ്റര്‍ പെട്രോളിൻ്റെ വില 84 രൂപ വര്‍ധിപ്പിച്ചു. ഇതോടെ പെട്രോള്‍ വില  ലിറ്ററിന് 338 ശ്രീലങ്കൻ രൂപയായി ഉയർന്നു. മരുന്നുകളുടെയും ഉപകരണങ്ങളുടെയും ദൗര്‍ലഭ്യം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിച്ച് രാജ്യത്തെ പ്രധാന ശിശു ആശുപത്രിയിലെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാരും ഇന്നു പ്രതിഷേധം നടത്തിയിരുന്നു.

അവശ്യവസ്തുക്കളായ ഭക്ഷണം, മരുന്ന്, ഇന്ധനം തുടങ്ങിയവ ഇറക്കുമതി ചെയ്യാന്‍ വിദേശനാണ്യമില്ലാതെ കഴിഞ്ഞ കുറച്ച് ആഴ്ച്ചകളായി ശ്രീലങ്ക ശക്തമായ സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലാണ്. പ്രസിഡൻ്റ് ഗോതബായ രാജപക്‌സെയുടെ രാജി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടുള്ള പ്രതിഷേധം ആരംഭിച്ച് ആഴ്ചകള്‍ പിന്നിടുകയുമാണ്. 1948-ല്‍ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം ലഭിച്ചതിനു ശേഷമുള്ള ഏറ്റവും ഗുരുതരമായ സാമ്പത്തിക പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലൂടെയാണ് രാജ്യം കടന്നുപോകുന്നത്.

Colombo: One person has been killed in police firing on anti-government protesters in Sri Lanka. Several people were injured. The government shoots against the anti-government agitation in Sri Lanka, which is in the financial crisis. A Sri Lankan police spokesman said the mob had turned violent and hurled stones at police, forcing them to open fire.

The shooting took place in Rambukkana, 95 km from the Sri Lankan capital Colombo. Severe fuel shortages and soaring prices have forced people to take to the streets in protest. Protests erupted today in various parts of the country. Thousands of motorists protested, burning tires and blocking access to Colombo.

Sri Lanka's leading petrol retailer today hiked fuel prices by more than 65 per cent. This was followed by protests in various parts of the country. Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, owned by the Sri Lankan government, has increased the price of a liter of petrol by Rs 84. With this, petrol price has gone up to Rs 338 per liter. Doctors at the country's leading children's hospital also staged a protest today, citing a shortage of medicines and equipment.

Sri Lanka has been in a severe financial crisis for the past few weeks without foreign exchange to import essential commodities such as food, medicine and fuel. It has been weeks since protests began demanding the resignation of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. The country is going through the worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.
